Elon Musk announced in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that xAI will release its first AI product to a select group of people on Saturday, claiming it will be “the best yet” in some important ways. Founded in March, xAI is apparently trying to take on industry like OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, which have developed some of the world’s most advanced chatbots, including ChatGPT, Bard and Claude.
Elon Musk’s xAI to unveil its first product.
Known for his ambitious and sometimes controversial ideas, Musk expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of artificial intelligence, especially its incompatibility with human values and goals. In April, he unveiled plans to create a new AI tool called “TruthGPT,” which he said would avoid the pitfalls of “political correctness” and instead focus on objective reality.
To achieve this goal, Musk assembled a group of leading AI scientists and engineers who previously worked at companies such as DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Twitter and Tesla. It has also acquired thousands of powerful GPUs from Nvidia, a leading maker of chips for artificial intelligence applications, to create a large language model that can rival or surpass existing ones.
According to xAI founder Greg Yang, the company’s mission is to explore the “mathematics of deep learning,” a branch of artificial intelligence that uses large neural networks to learn from data and perform complex tasks. Yang said xAI will “develop a ‘theory of everything’ for large neural networks and take artificial intelligence to a ‘new level’.” Musk founded xAI in Nevada in March, according to official filings. He previously renamed Twitter as “X Corp. ” in some financial reports, but xAI’s website explains that it is a separate entity from X Corp. and that it “works closely with X (Twitter), Tesla and other companies to advance our mission.”
